Dongzhi marks the winter solstice — the shortest day and longest night of the year. After this point, yang energy begins to strengthen. It is one of the most important solar terms, sometimes called 'the winter festival.'
In the south, tangyuan (sweet rice balls) symbolize family unity. In the north, dumplings are eaten. Family gatherings are held, similar to a second New Year celebration.
