BaZi (八字), meaning "Eight Characters," is the Four Pillars of Destiny system in Chinese astrology. Your chart has four pillars - Year, Month, Day, and Hour - each composed of a Heavenly Stem (天干) and an Earthly Branch (地支). Together they form eight characters that describe your innate nature, timing, and elemental balance at the moment of birth.
The Day Master (日主) is the Heavenly Stem of your Day pillar - the most important single character in BaZi. It represents your core self, personality tendencies, and primary element. All other stems and branches in the chart are interpreted relative to the Day Master, much like the sun in a solar system.

BaZi (八字) astrology dates back to the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE), pioneered by astrologer Master Li Xuzhong who analyzed birth year, month, and day pillars using the Five Elements. During the Song Dynasty (960–1279 CE), scholar Xu Ziping revolutionized the practice by introducing the Hour Pillar and establishing the Day Master (日主) as the core of individual destiny analysis, founding the modern Ziping BaZi method.
