Chinese New Year Animals: How the Lunar Year Changes Signs
Understanding the lunisolar calendar mechanics that govern Chinese Zodiac animal transitions.
How the Lunar New Year Dictates the Zodiac Animal
In the Western Gregorian calendar, the new year arrives unconditionally on midnight of January 1. However, in the Chinese lunisolar calendar, the new year begins on the second new moon following the winter solstice (occurring between January 21 and February 20).
This astronomical mechanism means that the Chinese Zodiac animal does not change on January 1. Instead, the current animal reigns until the stroke of midnight on Lunar New Year’s Eve (Chuxi / 除夕). Children born before this midnight belong to the outgoing animal, while those born on or after New Year’s Day belong to the incoming animal.
